In the setting there is a secure and non-secure mode. What is the actual difference between them? If I dont use secure mode, my forums will not be secure?

do you mean secure cookie setting? this is for the secure HTTPS type of server which uses SSL. miniBB cookies are secure anyway, cause we encrypt them with MD5 algorythm. and this setting is mostly for compatibility with your server software in case you're running SSL server.
