$sortTopics - $sortingTopics ?

Ok, this is probably a very stupid question but here goes.

In the user_dataform.html file there is a line sortTopics, yet in the setup_options.php file it's sortingTopics. Shouldn't that one also be sortTopics?

No, they are two completely different variables for different purposes.
