Not really a bug but a bit of a pain in the ass for MacOS users - some of the filenames in the templates directory are longer than 31 characters. MacOS (not OSX) only allows 31. It makes maintaining a site a bit painful.

Hmm, thanx for suggestion! We must take this into acceptance with new release.

(By the way, I am very surprised that MacOS is using so stupid system).

By the way, are there allowed 31 symbols WITH file extension, or WITHOUT it?

MacOS is very old and I guess they where proud when they allowed 31 characters instead of 8.3 which DOS used at that time.
I think they missed the train when Windows95 supported 255 characters (theoretically) *g*

There isn't such a thing as a file extension in MacOS as the file type is included in a resource fork. File extensions are DOS hangovers. Each file is really two in MacOS with a resource fork containing the 'creator' type info of the app that created the file eg. MS Word and a data fork containing the actual file. You can rename your .DOC file as .EXE and the Mac still knows it's a Word file. It's more useful than Windows where .doc files always get opened by Word even if they are just text files but not as useful as BeOS which used to run off mime types and magic numbers.

31 characters (including spaces) is just the historic limit MacOS had since day 1. So that's WITH the extension if you must.

It's 255 or something like that in MacOSX now but not everyone has made the move to that yet of course. Some what dumbly Apple decided to use file extensions in MacOSX but they don't show them on the desktop.

Thanx for really good description :) So, if MacOS have no file extensions, how can you _really_ use a miniBB? It HAS file extensions! Or MacOS knows also about .php files?
And, still wandering, how can we make miniBB adjustable for MacOS then? To short out the filenames WITH or WITHOUT extensions?

Macs have a thing called 'Exchange' which maps file extensions from non-Mac files to applications. When you copy them from a unix/dos box to a Mac, the resource forks get set up pointing them at the correct app as defined in Exchange that matches the file extension.

You can then change the file extension to anything you like or delete it entirely and it'll still open in the defined application.

All you need do for MiniBB is to make sure the filenames are 31 characters or less including the .php and then MacOS9 or earlier won't truncate the filenames.

Great description! Thanx. Maybe in miniBB 1.4 we really need to implement it.
