Users can't change preferences (Error in user data)

When a normal user tries to change his preferences he gets the message: "Error in user data: Possibly incorrect email! Please contact administrator for more answers."

Any idea what I can do to remedy this?

Seems like the problem occurs when two users are registered with the same email address, like for instance an administrator with an extra user account.

you can only have one user per email address.
